The smartphones of Google have gone through several phases over the last few years, earning many admirers generation after generation. One of the big surprises was the launch of the Pixel 3a in May 2019.

In its day, we celebrate that the company had decided to release a more affordable mid-range smartphone model. With the Pixel 3a, Google borrowed the design and main features of its flagship.

In 2020, we could witness the premiere of a new generation of this cheaper model. It is not ruled out that there is more than one, and that is that the leaked codes suggest a 4a model, another 4a XL, and, for the first time, a third 5G.

Do not miss our compilation of all the rumors circulating about the Google Pixel 4a in terms of price, release date, features, and much more.

Launch: When will the Google Pixel 4a go on sale?

It had been speculated that the Pixel 4a would arrive alongside the Pixel 4 last October. However, it was not. Personally, we are not surprised, especially when we consider that the Pixel 3a had gone on sale only a few months before.

It usually takes at least a year between the launch of one generation and another. Thus, considering that the Pixel 3a came into our lives in May 2020, everything pointed to the Pixel 4a could also be released this coming May.

It had to do it at Google's big annual event, the Google I / O, which was scheduled for May 12, 13, and 14, but concern over the advancement of the coronavirus has led to its cancellation.

There is no official release date yet, but the German blog Caschys claims to have taken internal documents from Vodafone Germany and these would suggest that the Pixel 4a would go on sale on May 22.

If so, this means your ad is getting closer. If it happens as the Pixel 3a (which was presented a week before reaching the stores), then the new Google smartphone could be introduced this May 15.

This date is very close to the days when this year's Google I / O should have taken place, but taking into account the situation in which we find ourselves, the company may decide to wait longer between announcement and start-up. sale.

Google Pixel 4a rumors

While there have been unconfirmed rumors about the Pixel 4a launching in 2020 for several months, recently an image appeared of the alleged Pixel 4a retail packaging confirming the existence of the phone and its name. The image is shown in the retail package also confirmed that the phone will carry a dual-camera sensor very similar to the Pixel 4, which was one of the first Pixel phones to switch to dual cameras after adhering to single-lens cameras with the first three Pixel Flagships.

Size and design

The Pixel 4a will borrow a lot from the Pixel 4, which isn't particularly a surprise at the moment. However, leaks have revealed that it won't have an edge-to-edge screen, something Google will probably want to reserve for its high-end offerings. This also means that customers will be treated with thicker bezels than on Pixel 4.

The phone will use a polycarbonate body, so users won't see the iconic premium materials found on Pixel 4. However, this is something that manufacturers do all the time with iconic low-cost alternatives, so It shouldn't come as a big surprise to fans.

The phone is rumored to have dimensions of 144.2 x 69.5 x 8.2mm, which is not much different compared to the Pixel 4. However, the phone will be around 9mm thick around the camera. If true, this would mean that Google has managed to keep the Pixel 4a as thin as the original Pixel 4.

All the rumors so far have mentioned that the Pixel 4a probably won't have a face recognition sensor, which was significantly improved with the Pixel 4. Instead, Google will use a fingerprint scanner located on the back panel, which is in line with the Pixel 3a.

Like the predecessor, the Pixel 4a will be sold in two colors: just black and just blue. There is also talk of a release of a white variant sometime later, but there is still no confirmation on this front. Leaks have also shown official Google cases, so expect to find a handful of phone accessories when it launches.

Also different from the Pixel 4a is the inclusion of a perforating camera on the front, making it more in line with Samsung's newer flagships. This is probably a key differentiating factor between the Pixel 4 and the 4a, as the former uses a more elaborate front-facing camera sensor that is placed alongside the 3D TOF biometric sensor.

Screen/Display

Surprisingly, there is still no concrete information on this front, but rumors currently point to a 5.81-inch OLED screen with a 2340 x 1080 resolution and a 60Hz screen refresh rate. Since this would basically mean that The Pixel 4a will be bigger than the standard Pixel, for now we are taking it with a grain of salt. We should learn more about the screen on the Pixel 4a soon enough.

Camera
The on-board camera of the Pixel 4a is practically a mystery right now. While initial reports, including the retail packaging leak, seemed to suggest that the phone will have a dual camera, it turns out that Google will only go with a 12.2MP single-lens rear camera. This is a bit of a disappointment, but it's not really a surprise given that it's supposed to be a low-cost version of the Pixel 4. Upfront, users will be treated to an 8MP selfie camera, which should do the job for the video. calls and selfies. The secondary front sensor for face unlock will not be used in the 4th.

Other features
As this is a mid-range offering, Google will be using the Snapdragon 730 SoC with 4G LTE support on supported networks worldwide.

According to reports, RAM storage will increase to 6GB, while the company will provide 64 and 128GB of storage options without a microSD card slot. The phone will reportedly switch to UFS 2.1 flash storage, which will offer significantly improved read/write speeds. This will be a major change compared to the Pixel 3a, which only came with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Since there probably won't be an XL version, the decision to offer a larger storage version makes perfect sense.

Like the Pixel 3a before this, we hope that the Pixel 4a will also include eSIM capabilities. These are some of the other eSIM phones that you can check out today in the industry.

Google is reportedly not making any drastic changes to the battery compartment, with a 3,080 mAh unit expected to be under the hood. The Pixel 3a, by comparison, comes with a 3,000 mAh battery. Also, the phone will support 18W fast charging, probably with USB Power Delivery 2.0 on board. The USB C port will take care of battery charging and data transfer tasks.

What surprised some of us is the mention of a 3.5mm headphone jack on the Pixel 4a. The Pixel 4 does not have the headphone jack, although the Pixel 3a did have one even though the Pixel 3 did not have it in 2018. Therefore this is still uncertain, although it would be a logical inclusion given that the phone is aimed at markets around the world where corded headsets prevail.

What will the Pixel 4a miss?

No face unlock or motion detection
Since the idea of the Pixel 4a is to offer a cheaper alternative to customers, likely, some of the advanced features we saw with the Pixel 4 are missing. This includes the advanced Face ID sensor and Motion Sense. While face unlock was a crucial addition to the Pixel 4, Motion Sense is still somewhat limited in terms of functionality, so it's probably not going to be a huge glitch.

No water resistance
While the Pixel 4 promoted IP68-certified dust and water resistance, it appears that the Pixel 4a will also skip this feature. Water-resistance is one of the main characteristics of any smartphone, particularly a mid-range offering. This could be a costly loss since the recently introduced iPhone SE (2020) comes with IP67 water resistance on board. Like any other mid-range phone, the Pixel 4a will largely compare to Apple's alternative when it breaks the cover, and the lack of water resistance will certainly not look good on the spec sheet.

No wireless charging
It will probably disappoint some people, although it is not a surprise given that it is a mid-range smartphone. However, users shouldn't mind this too much as the phone will support 18W cable charging. So while the Pixel 4 demonstrates the best of Google's shed technology, the Pixel 4a is obviously an underpowered version of that.

No. 5G
Despite the rumors surrounding 5G, it's still a relatively new concept for much of the world. Because the Pixel 4a is aimed at the budget audience and also customers who were unable to get the Pixel 4 due to region-related restrictions, omitting 5G from the spec list will probably not make much of a difference.

Will there be a Pixel 4a XL

Multiple initial reports suggested that there will be a Pixel 4a XL. This made sense since the Pixel 3a had an XL version together. However, things may not be the same this year. Although Google is said to be working on a Pixel 4a XL, it was abandoned, possibly at the last minute. A leak even revealed a possible back panel for the XL model listed on eBay, but the phone appears to have been removed at this point.

Google Pixel 4a price
This is an area in which all experts agree. Following the Pixel 3a's price pattern, it's safe to assume that the phone will cost significantly less than $ 500 when it finally goes on sale. Many suggest that the phone will start from $ 399 for the 64GB model, while the 128GB variant could hit $ 479.

This is particularly true when we consider Google's pricing strategy for its smartphones. Each major Pixel update has cost the same as its predecessor, though this time things will be slightly different as there is no XL version hitting the markets. It is likely that

Should you be excited
The Pixel 4a comes at a time when smartphones are further away from people's minds. The smartphone is expected to cost around $ 400 for the 64GB version, making it a cheat in many ways. Considering the hardware specs we expect to see from the phone, it may be the only true mid-range to take on Apple's ambitious iPhone SE upgrade. While the Pixel 4a is superior in almost every respect to the iPhone SE (2020), the timing of its launch will be everything.

If you're looking for an alternative on the Android side, well, there aren't too many. We say this because Pixel phones are always the first to receive Android updates. This is one of the main advantages of having an Android smartphone made by Google.

The phone will launch with Android 10 out of the box, and it will eventually be one of the first phones on the list to get Android 11 when it launches sometime in the fall. Considering these factors, Google could probably hit big with the Pixel 4a.

With the high-end version possibly containing 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM, the Pixel 4a doesn't really seem like a mid-range in the conventional sense, and this may propel it through the competition.

It is no secret that the Pixel 3a and 3a XL were very successful in various parts of the world. If the company wants to replicate its success with the 2020 iteration, timing will surely be everything.

So if you're looking for a mid-range smartphone with central Android, lots of RAM space, and revamped camera software designed for the device, you have plenty of reasons to be excited about the Pixel 4a.
