TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps have been banned by India. Thus, it joins the United States, which has also vetoed TikTok in official and military fields.
The popular TikTok video social network and 58 other Chinese apps have been banned in India. A severe setback, as it was unable to operate in the second-most populous country in the world, with almost 1,400 million inhabitants.
The Indian government has issued a statement accusing these applications of " compromising the security, defense, sovereignty, and integrity of India ." Military sources call them " spyware and malware ."
In the list, in addition to TikTok, there are very popular social networks like WeChat or Weibo, browsers, antivirus, Xiaomi apps like Mi Community or Mi Video Call, and even games like Clash of Kings.
TikTok has long been a target in the United States, where it has been banned in government and military media, considering it an app that collects all kinds of user data. Experts who have analyzed it practically consider it spyware.
Now India goes one step further and completely prohibits it. The Indian government itself, which had a TikTok account with more than a million followers, has closed it after the announcement.
The government statement indicates that the India Cyber Crime Communication Center has thoroughly analyzed these 59 apps, and concluded that "they pose a serious risk to data security and privacy ."
The decision also has a political component. On June 15, a confrontation on the border with China in the Himalayas left 20 Indian soldiers dead.
Since then there have been boycotts of Chinese products in the country, with calls to " consume national product " carried out by Indian ministers and authorities.
A few weeks ago, an app to remove all Chinese mobile apps, which Google removed from Google Play, became very popular in the country.
Both the United States and India reject this as a political decision and claim that TikTok poses a risk to data security and privacy. A doubly worrying fact considering that it is mainly used by children and adolescents worldwide. It is even more popular than YouTube in these age groups.
We will see how the matter ends, but this ban is undoubtedly a hard blow for TikTok, as it is one of the countries with the largest number of users.
