Comparison iPhone SE (2020) VS OnePlus 8

This week has been warm when it comes to smartphone launches. If on day 14 OnePlus presented its OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, on day 15 Apple did the same with the iPhone SE (2020)Two phones (three, if we consider the two variants of the OnePlus) very different, and that also mark different strategies, whose specifications it is interesting to summarize for all those who are thinking of changing their smartphone, either staying in their system (Android or iOS) or jumping to the other.

There is no doubt that every time Apple launches a new phone, the bread rises. But this time, also, it was a highly anticipated launch, since it was the rereading of the iPhone SE of 2017, a phone with a restrained price that represents the entry range of iPhone for those who do not want to spend too much money on a brand phone. But you do not want to give up a smartphone with iOS and with more than decent features.

For its part, OnePlus continues to step on the innovation pedal, and more than opting to offer handsets with good features at reduced prices (where that facet of OnePlus was already…), this time it has been launched by a more premium smartphone, and more expensive (especially in its Pro version), of the latest generation. As we see, a totally different approach to Apple, which we are going to compare right now with its competitor.

screen

How could it be otherwise, in this comparison iPhone SE (2020) VS OnePlus 8 we had to start by putting face to face the first thing we see from a mobile: its screen. And here we are before two different worlds.

While the iPhone has returned to its famous 4.7 ”format (small size for what we are used to seeing today, but more than enough for millions of people), OnePlus wants to turn your phone into a multimedia consumer center, with screens of 6.55 "and 6.78" for the normal model and the Pro respectively. But, also, if the iPhone opts for a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels (with a density of 326 dpi), OnePlus jumps to 2400 x 1080 px in the normal model (that is, 402 dpi) and at 3168 x 1440 px on the Pro model (513 dpi). Therefore, here we will see a much higher sharpness, especially in the OnePlus 8 Pro.

But screens do not live by resolution alone. There are other characteristics such as the technology with which the pixels illuminate, or the refresh rate. If we talk about technologies, Apple has opted for a Retina HD pan with IPS LCD panel, while OnePlus raises the list to a Fluid AMOLED, which also provides 90 Hz refreshment, or even a brand new 120 Hz in the case OnePlus 8 Pro, which radically change the experience of using the terminal. Also, it incorporates a series of algorithms so that we can experience videos even from 24 FPS to 120 FPS, offering 1 billion colors to our delight.

Processor

This is one of the most complicated sections to compare because it has nothing to do with Android's use of a processor compared to what Apple squeezes from its own processors for its own operating system.
In any case, it is worth commenting in this comparative iPhone SE (2020) VS OnePlus 8 that OP has opted for the new Snapdragon 865 with 5G, and with an Adreno 650 GPU for graphics, which is a bet on the winning horse face to get the best performance possible (especially at those high resolutions and refresh rates, which test the capabilities of the system).

For its part, Apple incorporates in the iPhone SE (2020) its Apple A13 Bionic processor from the iPhone 11 Pro, with a 7nm construction, and a 3rd generation Neural Engine NPU. Here the American manufacturer has not wanted to risk and has opted for a very powerful chip that, undoubtedly, will be more than enough to move the vast majority of games that a user of this smartphone will want to use (obviously it is not a terminal intended to a gamer audience) and, of course, to move the daily tasks with total ease.

Memory

In the RAM section, we have no information on how much memory the iPhone SE will incorporate (maybe 3 GB of RAM?). What we do know is that the OnePlus 8 offers configurations of 8 and 12 GB of RAM, both in the normal model and in the Pro, although in the latter the memory is LPDDR5 instead of the LPDDR4 of the normal model. That translates to almost 50% faster speed and higher energy consumption efficiency. The question is whether, at the time of practice, you really notice that difference in a smartphone that is already a real beast.

Camera

Without a doubt, one of the most important elements today. Here we find quite a few differences between the Apple phone and the OnePlus phone, since limiting the options of the photographic section is one of the ways that manufacturers have to further reduce the price of a terminal (not only due to the cost of the camera component). itself, but to facilitate the design in general, the use of the processor, etc.). Let's go by parts

Rear cameras

The new iPhone SE (2020) opts for a modest configuration of a single camera, with a resolution of 12 MP and f / 1.8, including the fantastic optical image stabilization that Apple has accustomed us to. Also, and as a claim within their advertising actions, they highlight the ability to record video at 4K resolution and 60 FPS. Despite having only one camera, they claim to achieve a very successful background blur effect, thanks to the A13 Bionic chip, which in most cases will probably offer a very good result. It will also allow you to modify the amount of blur in the background after taking the picture.

The Apple device also includes an intelligent HDR mode to optimize scenes with overexposed and underexposed areas, so that you do not lose the detail of the scene. And, even in 4K video recording, expanded dynamic range is enabled to optimize highlights and shadows.
The Chinese manufacturer, meanwhile, offers two different camera configurations. In the normal model it incorporates a 48 MP Sony IMX586 sensor with a pixel size of 0.8 µm and 6 lenses, f / 1.75 aperture and both OIS and EIS stabilization. Also, it includes a 16 MP and f / 2.2 wide-angle lens, with 116º of view, and a 2MP f / 2.4 macro. The Pro model, meanwhile, mounts a Sony IMX689 sensor, also 48 MP, but with a larger pixel size (1.12 µm at 48 MP or 2.24 µm at 12 MP), and 7 lenses, with aperture f / 1.78. This will translate into brighter, richer color images, most likely. Also, this model offers a lens with a 5 MP color filter and f / 2.44 aperture, and a telephoto lens with x3 hybrid zoom. In both models (normal and Pro), also, we have a slow-motion recording of 480 fps at 720p or 240FPS at 1080p.

It should be noted that OnePlus has introduced its improved mode for pets (dogs and cats), detecting when the animal is within the frame and automatically adjusting the scene to avoid blurred movements.

Front cameras

As for the front camera of the new iPhone SE (2020), we know that it has a 7 MP sensor, with f / 2.2 aperture. It is a simple but sufficient bet to obtain good quality selfies, especially in "decent" lighting situations.
OnePlus has incorporated in both models, for its part, a 16 MP IMX471 1 µm sensor with electronic stabilization, and f / 2.45 aperture, with which it promises to obtain very good quality front shots. Of course, this time we say goodbye to the periscope-type motorized camera, and we find the new camera in a hole in the screen, in the upper left corner.

Dimensions

Another section in which the terminals of both brands are quite different is in their dimensions. While the iPhone SE (2020) is a smaller, more manageable device (37.3 x 138.4 x 7.3mm) and lighter (148g), the new OnePlus 8 is larger (72.9 x 160, 2 x 8 mm in the normal version and 74.35 x 165.3 x 8.5 mm in the Pro version) and heavier (180 g in the normal version and 199 g in the Pro version, almost reaching the psychological barrier of 200 grams).

It should be noted in this comparative iPhone SE (2020) VS OnePlus 8, regarding the construction, that the iPhone brings back the design with upper and lower frames (in the style of the iPhone 8), taking advantage of the fact that it mounts a screen of only 4.7 ″. The result of these frames is being able to once again have the physical button with TouchID in the lower area (losing the Face ID), which many users will undoubtedly appreciate.

Prices

In the prices section we find important differences that have greatly surprised the community (which, by the way, is one of the fundamental pillars in OnePlus' strategy).
While the Apple brand has chosen this time to offer a device with a "reduced" price, thinking of reaching the widest possible audience that does not need a premium terminal without wanting to compromise on good quality, the manufacturer OnePlus has shot up the price of your device, due to the quality of the components used and the design of the new OnePlus 8.
The price of the iPhone SE (2020) will start from € 489, while OnePlus, for the normal model, will bring us the 8GB / 12GB version for € 709 and 12GB / 256GB for € 809. The OnePlus 8 Pro model will start at € 909 for the 8GB / 128GB version and will reach € 1009 for the 12GB / 256GB. And, from our point of view, if they have decided to cross the psychological barrier of € 1000 for this last device, for only € 9, it is because they must do so for them to get the bills since it seems to us a risky move due to their part (very especially in the situation of an international crisis that we are experiencing).

Other aspects

Other aspects to highlight in our comparison are the fact that the iPhone SE (2020) has IP67 resistance, WiFi6, support for wireless charging and Dual SIM using NanoSIM and eSIM. Rather, it offers a 5W charger only, despite supporting 18W fast charging. And unfortunately, we have no news that it will be compatible with 5G
The OnePlus 8, meanwhile, does offer 5G connectivity, in addition to WiFi6, Dual NanoSIM, NFC, 30W fast charging and wireless charging, as well as IP68 certification in the Pro model

conclusion

After this previous comparison between the Apple and OnePlus terminals, we concluded that both smartphones are very interesting models for the public they are attacking. The iPhone SE (2020) will bring a very powerful chip, small dimensions, and elements such as wireless charging, to a public who is looking for an iPhone at a good price and good features, without having to incorporate multiple cameras, but for normal everyday use. We think that, at that price, you can have a very good tour, and you will probably end up cannibalizing some of your older brothers.
For its part, the OnePlus 8 (and 8 Pro), which in performance on paper are above the iPhone SE (2020) in practically all sections, will delight the most demanding users. The refresh rate of its screen, 5G connectivity, its frameless design, and its camera configuration for any type of situation, make this mobile a real beast that, as such, has a high cost.
We will have to wait to see how the public responds in both cases. In the meantime, we will continue to keep you posted here at Merchandising. And, of course, we remind you that in our section Smartphones within the store you have a selection of all kinds of models, at the best prices!
